Newsela: One Story, Five Reading Levels

The biggest challenge in a diverse classroom (or at home) is finding content that fits everyone. Newsela solves this by taking real-world news from top publishers and magically adapting it to fit the reader's skill.

Imagine reading an article from the Washington Post or Scientific American. Now imagine that same article being rewritten instantly to be simpler for a 3rd grader or more complex for a high school senior. That is the power of Newsela.

The Core Magic: Levelling

Every article on the platform is published at 5 different Lexile levels. This means:

This allows an entire class to discuss the same topic—like "SpaceX launching a new rocket" or "Global Climate Policy"—while each student reads a version of the text that challenges them appropriately without causing frustration.

Engagement & Assessment

Reading is only half the battle. Comprehension is the goal. Newsela integrates assessment tools directly into the reading experience.

Quiz Interface
Each article comes with a 4-question quiz aligned to reading standards.

As students read, they can highlight text in different colors (Yellow for evidence, Green for questions, etc.) and add annotations. Teachers can view these annotations to see what the student is thinking in real-time. The quizzes update automatically based on the reading level selected, ensuring the questions are fair.

Content That Matters

Newsela isn't just "news." The library helps connect students to the world around them through diverse topics:

Why It Works

When students are forced to read text that is too hard, they disengage. When it's too easy, they get bored. Newsela hits the "Zone of Proximal Development" perfectly every time. It empowers students by giving them the same "adult" news as their peers, just in a format they can digest.
